Onion Chutney | Chutney For Dosa | South Indian Onion Chutney | Chutney For Idli. This spicy tangy red coloured chutney is a popular side dish for Dosa and Idli. Typically these chutney’s are prepared from red chilies which gives rich dark red colour to it. Very easy and simple South Indian Chutney.

Onion Chutney

 4 Onions chopped
 1 tsp Urad dal
 1 tsp Chana dal
 2 Red chillies
 1 tbsp Thick tamarind extract
 Salt to taste
 Oil
For tempering:
 2 tsp Oil
 1 tsp Mustard seeds
 1 tsp Urad dal
 Pinch of asafoetida

In a pan add 2 tsp of oil and roast 1 tsp urad dal, 1 tsp chana dal, 2 red chilli on low flame.

Add 4 chopped onions, sauté the onions till they turn slightly golden in color.

Cool completely, then grind with salt, 1tbsp thick tamarind extract and little water.

Now prepare the tempering by heating 2 tsp oil. Add 1 tsp mustard seeds, 1 tsp urad dal, pinch of hing. Allow the tempering to splutter. Pour the tempering over onion chutney and mix well.
