Clean and wash the dal. Now add 1 cup toor dal, ¼ tsp turmeric powder with a cup of water in a cooking vessel and cook till the dal becomes tender.
Now grind ¼ cup coconut, 2 green chilli, ¼ tsp cumin seeds and 2 garlic cloves.
Mix this grinded mixture to cooked dal then add 1 tsp tamarind paste.
Boil for 5 min, adjust the salt and sugar. Switch off the stove.
Now take a separate pan and heat with 1 tbsp of oil. Add ½ tsp mustard seeds. When they start to crackle add ½ tsp cumin seeds, 4 garlic cloves, few curry leaves and a pinch of asafoetida. Fry for 1 min.
Pour the tempering over dal.
